Box Hill Institute Integrated Technology Hub

Deakin University AFFRIC Buildings ‘nj’ and ‘nk’

The project comprises of two buildings; ones to be occupied by the Victorian Centre for Advanced Materials Manufacturing (VCAMM) the other by the CSIRO. Both buildings are PC2 capable. VCAMM will occupy the building known as ‘nj Building’. This building, when completed will deliver 2,771 sq/m Gross Floor Area (GFA) (not including mezzanine level plant areas) and includes:
A highly serviced space for the manufacture of carbon-fibre (CF)
A gas oxidation plant to treat oven and furnace waste to worlds best practice
An air-conditioned plant control room, rack room for control equipment and a ventilated power room to directly support the operation of equipment on the CF line
Specialised plant spaces and storage spaces to support the operation of the CF line, including a cooling water system
An Ultra High Purity (UHP) N2 storage facility, industrial grade compressed air and a fire separated room for the storage of precursor material
Air-conditioned office space for administration, meeting rooms, amenities and storage.
Storage for a laboratory and plant waste.
The VCAMM facility is the first carbon fibre pilot line operated by a university in the world an is a unique project. Consultation with stakeholders to ensure that all design parameters are well understood has been critical to the design development of this part of the project.

Australian Red Cross Blood Service

Fitout of an existing building for the purpose of blood processing, production, sampling and administration for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. The facility is the Victorian and Tasmanian Principal Site (VTPS) of the ARCBS. The scope included all fitout and services, including the provision of all new plant and equipment to approximately 16,500m2 with a Basement, Ground Floor, First Floor and Second Floor.  Consisting of Offices, staff breakout and meeting rooms, Reception, Laboratories, warehousing, Cool & Freezer rooms, Plant areas and landscaping.

Surf Coast Community and Civic Precinct Stage 1

Registered for a Greenstar office design rating and targeting a 5 Star rating , this project includes the construction of the new Surf Coast Shire Council offices and associated roadways, landscaping and wetland construction.  In addition to the new Shire offices a new sports precinct is to be constructed including an AFL ground, a synthetic soccer field, four Netball courts and associated sports pavilion.

Sunshine Hospital TTR and Radiotherapy

The construction of the new Teaching, Training and Research (TTR) Facility, Radiotherapy building and redevelopment of the area known as ‘Mount Sunshine’.

The TTR Facility includes a new main lobby, reception and function area, a clinical school, a library, office accommodation, wet labs and clinical trials labs, a 200 seat auditorium, lecture theatre, tutorial rooms, student lounge, a short term animal storage and a metabolic gym, and the Radiotherapy Building is a 2700m2 single level building fully fitted out which has been structurally designed for a further three levels to be added in future developments.  It consists of treatment rooms (CT & Ortho Voltage rooms and Linear Accelerator bunkers), day beds, administration offices, planning areas, main foyer and all associated staff and patient support areas.

The projects were constructed whilst sections of the existing hospital remained operational.

Melbourne Brain Centre – Austin Hospital

Cockram Construction was engaged by Florey Neuroscience Institutes to carry out works associated with the construction of the Melbourne Brain Centre, Heidelberg. The Melbourne Brain Centre consists of a three level office and research facility for the Florey Neuroscience Institute (FNI). The new facility is to conduct both basic and clinical research into addiction, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, epilepsy, Huntington’s disease, motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury.

Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication

The Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication (MCN) is the main facility of the Victorian Node of the Australian National Fabrication facility. The project links seven university based nodes to provide researchers and industry access to state of the art fabrication facilities. MCN is based at Monash University Science Research Park in Clayton. The building covers 3,800m2 and is made up of three main functional pavilions. The research pavilion is one level plus a dedicated mezzanine plant room with trafficable ceiling. The pavilion contains Class 10,000 clean rooms, Class 100 clean rooms, PC2 laboratory, general labs and associated offices and amenities. Following completion of the initial project, Cockram was awarded the Class 100 clean room fitout and we worked closely with the client to ensure minimal disruption to the operation of the newly completed facility.
The Class 100 area is of the highest standard of clean room construction.

RMIT Building 13

Demolition, refurbishment and new structure and remediation works to the existing two storey (Emily Macpherson) and four storey (Ethil Margaret) buildings. The final outcome will comprise approximately 5000m2 of new floor space for the post graduate RMIT business faculty.

CSL Buiding 4 HVB – R&D Refurbishment

Internal demolition of an existing 6 level building whilst maintaining operation on two floors. The RC building with three occupied floors of laboratories and three interstitial plant floors was required to be gutted, and redressed to allow the new installation. CSL’s R&D use for the laboratories required a mix of PC2 small and large scale rooms, and general lab space. The large scale PC2 rooms, to incorporate relocated and new fermentation plant, were required to meet stringent air leakage requirements in the construction procedures and materials selection to ensure certification by OGTR and AQIS and to enable the fumigation of the rooms to be effective.

CSR Gyprocket Project

WEHI West enabling Works

Enabling Works Project for the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute Westerly Expansion (WEHI West).  The project includes:
Melbourne Health Decanting Works – Refurbishment of ground and basement levels of the existing Materials Handling Building to house Melbourne Health Offices and Workshops, and a 10 year old tilt panel warehouse in Tullamarine to house Melbourne Health Stores and Supply Department.
Other Enabling Works – WEHI Works – New chiller plant to serve existing and new WEHI, ramps to the existing basement car park, demolition of the western car park and existing Royal Melbourne Hospital buildings on the new WEHI site, bulk excavation, piling and retaining walls and associated works for the basement of the new WEHI building and demolition of the freestanding concrete beams and columns in the existing WEHI forecourt.

Monash University STRIP, Stage 2

The Science Technology Research and Innovation Precinct project consists of two four-storey rectangular buildings totalling 17000m2, joined by a central circulation core. The buildings accommodate PC2 laboratories and an animal research level with a higher level of containment to the general laboratories.
The structure is a combination of precast concrete columns and walls, post tensioned suspended concrete slabs and structural steel framing to roof and plant room.  The buildings are clad in a curtain wall system of glass, aluminium and composite metal cladding including sun shades.  The fitout consists of offices, highly sophisticated laboratory and support spaces, used as a research and teaching facility.

Building 7 Botannica Corporate Park

Design and construction of Base Building of 4 levels of office and 2 levels of basement carpark including 1 level for plantroom, total of 7 levels.
The building achieved an ABGR rating of 4.5 stars and Greenstar rating of 4.0 stars for design.

South West TAFE Redevelopment

The South West TAFE Redevelopment project comprised construction of a new three level building in the central business district. The building comprises teaching areas, administration areas, student support and a large conference facility that provides extensive audio visual remote conferencing facilities. As the adjoining buildings are Heritage listed the design intent of this newbuilding was to provide a juxtaposition and as such the building is of a modern appearance. The construction of the façade required exact construction tolerances to ensure the geometry, and resulting appearance of the façade reflected the design intent.

Grovedale Aged Care Development

A 108 Bed Nursing Home for Barwon Health. The building is a single story building with a major plant area on the roof and two satellite air handling plant rooms also located on the roof. The building construction is an exterior of brick veneer with timber and alucobond cladding, internal timber framed plasterboard partitions, plasterboard and ceiling tile ceilings, and a colour bond roof.

The building includes six different wings and a central hub area. The six wings include single and double rooms, individual and shared ensuites, kitchens, lounge areas, soiled linen areas, internal courtyards and TV areas. The central hub area includes a staff room, consultant rooms, dining area, chapel, multi purpose room, kiosk, communications room, reception area, and hair dressing salon.

St Vincent’s Surgical Education Centre

Refurbishment of level 3 of the Healy Building to create a Surgical Education Centre. The facility also includes state of the art training laboratories and support and administration areas.  This project led to three other projects in the hospital, carried out while normal operations continued, totalling approx $10M.

The Northern Hospital Stage 2a

Construction of 2 new 32 Bed fully serviced Nursing Units, a new Wound Clinic, as well as alterations and additions to the Emergency Triage and Administration Departments, Dining Rooms, Ambulatory Care, Paediatrics, Mortuary and Pathology Departments.  The construction included piling through existing poor soil conditions for the building foundations.
A special feature of this project was that all new and interfacing Works were required to be constructed to suit the full operation of the hospital to ensure no bypass was achieved

Box Hill Hospital Spring Street Building

Two basement levels and five above-ground levels of car park, four levels of offices, dialysis clinics, consulting suites and laboratories constructed specifically with the ability to test blood, breath and food.

Chisholm Institute Centre for Integrated Engineering Services

The Centre for Integrated Engineering Services project consisted of 4 separate buildings, constructed while Chisholm continued full operation: 2-storey Robotics & Mechatronics Building approx 3000m2, Fabrication & Welding Building of 500m2 workshop and offices, 150m2 staffroom and the Polymer workshop and classrooms.

Parliament House Catering Upgrade

Extensive refurbishment to kitchen and dining areas of Melbourne’s Heritage Parliament House on Spring Street.  The project was completed while Parliament continued to sit.

Hume City Council Offices

A new owner-occupied office building for Hume City Council.  The building is 6 storeys plus a plant level and basement carparking and storage and is approximately 6,000m2.  The project is designed to achieve a Greenstar (TM) rating of 5, and the building design and materials are consistent with this.

Moorabbin Justice Centre

Construction of the Moorabbin Law Courts facility, including court rooms, chambers and offices for various Justice agencies.  The building incorporates ESD principles and is finished in materials including aluminium, copper, bluestone, concrete and glass.

Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) and Australian Industrial Registry (AIR)

A relocation to 11 Exhibition Street consisting of 6 levels of fitout incorporating 2 floors of offices, 2 floors of Judges’ / Associates’ chambers with own en-suites and 2 floors of courtrooms,12 courts in total. Audio Visual conferencing is a highlight of the technology used in 4 of these courts.  A lower-ground reception area has also been re-developed.
The courtrooms and chambers comprise of high level finishes, with veneered timber walls and furniture throughout. Judges’ also have private access to the building from the street, to the court areas and to their chambers.

DSTO Site Rationalisation Project Stage 2a

Work included general laboratories, industrial laboratories, offices, conference theatre, library and other general facilities. This project was completed in an operational Defence facility, with highly stringent security requirements.

Grace McKellar Hospital

Stage 2: Redevelopment works of the McKellar Centre Aged Care Facility including 200 Bed Nursing Homes, CRC/HUB upgrade and Food Services Kitchen using the cook chill process providing meals for all Barwon Health facilities in the region.

Latrobe Valley Police and Courts Complex

Victoria Agribiosciences Centre

This greenfield project comprised a new PC2 laboratory and office building for five tenants including the Department of Primary Industries, Florigene Flowers and La Trobe University.  The building consists of two levels with an overall floor area of approximately 6,000m2 and external car parking and is located in La Trobe University Research and Development Park. A special feature of the project is the façade which is made of many different materials, included cement sheet, alpolic, Stramit metal cladding, precast concrete and Laminex Trespa Meteon cladding.

Latrobe Valley Cancer Care

A single storey building constructed to house a linear accelerator for radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The structure is a combination of concrete and structural steel, clad in alucabond with cement sheeting with aluminium windows.
Two bunkers were constructed to house the linear accelerator, designed beyond normal Australian Standard building codes, to provide a safe environment for using radioactive equipment. This includes 1.8m thick floor, and 1.6m thick walls and ceiling.
The entire structure has been designed and constructed to allow for a first floor extension to be built above should it be required in the future.

Royal Australasian College of Surgeons

New 3-storey eastern wing including teaching facilities and offices in Melbourne’s City centre.  Included connection and refurbishment to part of the existing heritage listed building.  Part of the works included an archaeological dig.

Melbourne Grammar Memorial Hall

The Memorial Hall required fitout and installation of a Forestage lift and stage gantry fittings and a retractable auditorium seating arrangement, external cladding and landscaping.  The below-ground Music Hall included acoustic panelling and a retractable floor stage, The Basement included change rooms and a storage area.

Box Hill Institute of TAFE

The project comprised a new educational facility for biotechnology and commerce, incorporating multi-level car parking and provision of access and linkage to the existing campus via a pedestrian bridge over Elgar Road.  The building consists of five levels totaling 11,000m2 and includes veterinary and animal husbandry areas, hairdressing, internet café, teaching, laboratories for microbiology, DNA and chemistry and administration areas.  The link bridge was prefabricated on the ground, then transported and craned into position over a two-day period, requiring extensive planning and coordination. The project is visually striking, with architectural features and an interesting use of colours, building materials and angles

Sidney Myer Music Bowl Refurbishment

Major areas for refurbishment included replacing the canopy due to the prolonged water penetration through the edges of the ‘Alumply’ panels causing deterioration of the plywood and some delamination of the aluminum cladding; the entire canopy was therefore replaced with a new cladding system  which utilises an equivalent of the existing material.

Harvey Norman Hoppers Crossing

A retail facility of approx. 5500m2 with a warehouse of approx 1200m2. The development also includes 3 additional retail facilities of approx 4400m2. Incorporated within the space will be amenities blocks including kitchen facilities

Nike Concept Store

VIC – Australia

Nike Melbourne was the first retail outlet for Nike Australia Pty Ltd. Situated on the corner of Bourke and Swanston Street in the city, the outlet maintains a high profile position in keeping with a high profile interior.  An overall floor area of 1900 square metres (approx. 1300 as front of house space) the outlet is set up over two floors.

Victorian Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory

A 3,000m2, 4-level fitout including basement car park and plant areas, entry foyer and laboratory areas, administration, lift and replacement of the roof.
Laboratory benches were constructed using the “flexlab” system and existing bio hazard cabinets and fume cupboards were relocated from the existing premises at Fairfield.  The Level 4 area included two PC3 and one PC4 laboratory.  All waste from the PC4 laboratory was designed for treatment by a special trade waste system located in the Level 1 area which included processing with chemicals and 130° temperature steam prior to entering the sewerage system.
The project received special interest from N.A.D.A. and C.S.I.R.O. due to the uniqueness of the PC3 and PC4 laboratories and trade waste systems.

Melbourne Airport Short Term Carpark

Construction of a three storey concrete structure carpark, providing undercover parking for 3,500 cars, serviced by four ramps for vehicle entry and exit, three
service cores consisting of stairs, toilets and six elevators plus eight fire escape stairs.  The project was carried out in two stages with Stage 1 completed December 1996 to allow access to Stage 2. The carpark also comprised one of the most sophisticated car operating access and counting equipment plus high-tech security monitoring facilities.

Portland and District Hospital

Cockram added two new two-storey wings to the existing ward block, doubling the size of the theatre complex, and significant refurbishment to the existing building. At all times the Hospital was kept fully operational and Cockram coordinated works to minimise disruptions.
We provided significant input into the design documentation process, which was fast tracked.  The project suffered a significant delay due to a tendering embargo placed on all Government projects at that time.  Significant reprogramming was required as a result.  We accommodated an additional $2.0M in scope within the MP2 programme.
